Hip Pain Q & A

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain arises from problems in your hip joint, as well as the muscles and ligaments that support the joint. As a result, you may feel pain in the joint, side of your hip, buttocks, and groin.

Hip pain often occurs due to sports injuries, overuse injuries, and degenerative joint disease. A few examples of health conditions that frequently cause hip pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Labral tear
  • Synovitis
  • Bursitis
  • Infections
  • Tendonitis or tendon tear
  • Strains and sprains
  • Hip fractures and dislocations

An uncommon but painful problem called osteonecrosis occurs when the thigh bone in the hip joint loses some of its blood supply resulting in necrotic changes.

What symptoms accompany hip pain?

If you have hip pain, you may also have other symptoms in the joint such as:

  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Limited movement
  • Inability to put weight on the joint
  • Grinding or clicking in your hip
  • Pain that’s worse when you’re active

Lying on your side may also increase the pain.

How is hip pain treated?

Dr. Pang completes a thorough evaluation to identify the cause of your hip pain. Then he creates a customized treatment plan.

For most hip problems, your treatment begins with removing stress on your hip so it can heal. You may need to temporarily change your activities, rest your hip, or use an assistive device. Anti-inflammatory medications or a steroid injection may also give you some pain relief.

Physical therapy is an essential part of your treatment. A tailored exercise plan eases your pain, improves movement, and restores strength to the tissues supporting the joint.

As an expert in pain medicine, Dr. Pang may also recommend specialized treatments with steroid injections or PRP injections utilizing ultrasound guidance to ensure precise needle placement.

A few examples include:

Joint injections

Ultrasound-guided hip injections typically deliver steroids to reduce inflammation.

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections

PRP speeds up the healing process, reduces inflammation, and draws regenerative stem cells to the area.

Effective hip pain relief is available at Edward K. Pang Medical Corporation. To schedule an appointment, call the office or book an appointment online today.
